Lisa’s desktop is filled with checkerboard background, which cannot be changed. The single menu bar is located at the top of the screen, identically as in Mac OS. The icons at the desktop feature first-ever trashcan, control panel, clipboard and external hard disk.

This Preferences dialog has a completely different feel than the small, graphic-rich equivalent from Macintosh. Also notable is the lack of radio, checkbox, slider and tab controls – all those functions are covered by square buttons.

Shutting down in Lisa OS 1.0. The screenshot has an extra border (remove) and wrong aspect ratio (correct), and is a reproduction.

Lisa’s shutdown is somewhat unique, as it can be – to some point – cancelled, using a Apple+. combination later popular at Macintoshes. Please note the warning regarding external ProFile disk (not shown on systems without it). Also, during shutdown Lisa saves the entire state of desktop (including open windows), in order to restore it when turned on again.

Shutdown complete

This GUI doesn’t have this feature. Lisa turns itself off automatically, or rather goes into a sleep mode.

Font selection

This GUI doesn’t have this feature. The font is changed by means of a pop-up menu, a tradition taken over by Macintosh and continued in some applications to this day (cf. Macintosh and PC editions of Microsoft Word).

Open file

This GUI doesn’t have this feature. Lisa has a document-centric interface. No New and Open commands are necessary – the new document is torn from a stationery, and documents are opened just by double-clicking on them (it’s not possible to launch an application, system does that automatically).

Colour selector

This GUI doesn’t have this feature. Lisa has a monochromatic screen.
