The Invisible Computer: Why Good Products Can Fail, The Personal Computer Is So Complex, And Information Appliances Are The Solution
Donald A. Norman

MIT Press, 1998 (first edition)
ISBN: 0-2626-4041-4

This book’s preliminary purpose seems to be a mind-opener. Donald Norman draws a taunting vision of future computers, based not only on his experience and intuition, but also on parallels with other known and by now mature products, such as gramophone, and on general principles of marketing. However, it needs to be said that the book did feel a little bit dragging at times.

The Humane Interface: New Directions for Designing Interactive Systems
Jef Raskin

Addison-Wesley, 2000
ISBN: 0-2013-7937-6

Another mind-opener, written by the creator of Apple Macintosh and Canon Cat. The latter, ill-fated and largely unknown product, serves here as an example of thinking outside of the known and established solutions in user interface and HCI design. While we might not completely fall for keyboard-based Canon Cat as its creator did, nevertheless the book contains a fair amount of knowledge and creative thinking.
